A bit about Psych Out…

The East Side Institute established the Psych Out Awards to salute advances in human
development. Psych Out 2002 was a jubilant celebration of the Institute’s  work and recognition of the hundreds of innovators who contribute to the  field. Among the 270 guests were friends of awardees, social therapy clients,  graduates of the Institute’s training program, and supporters of programs  inspired by the Institute’s approach to human development and learning.

Through the Institute's successful fundraising for Psych Out 2002, a Development Campaign Fund was established to provide free and low cost training to psychologists, educators, social workers and health care providers in the US and around the world who work with disadvantaged populations. This year, the Community-Based  Abortion Care Intervention Research Project (COBAC) in Kenya has asked that  we train their staff in the social therapeutic approach. COBAC is a national health care program that involves the community in the reduction of maternal morbidity and mortality related to unsafe abortion and motherhood.  Also, Taiwanese psychologist and activist Dr. Lin Ching Hsia, who is the Institute’s first Fulbright Scholar, has asked Institute staff to come to Taiwan to train her colleagues. This is part of a grassroots network of  community organizers who work with the very poor, including illiterate adults
and sex workers.
