While it is true that many studies show men to be more prejudiced than women against homosexuals these studies typically fail to distinguish between prejudice toward gay men and toward lesbians. When we make this distinction, it appears that men and women are about equally prejudiced against lesbians but that there is a subgroup of men who are passionate in their distaste for male homosexuals. Researchers sometimes call such men "homophobic," and we might imagine that it is this group of men who commit most of the world's violence against male homosexuals. It could be argued that this homophobia is a culturally induced pathology.
