Notes on Reading a
Paula Caplan Book
Val Lewis

I have just read Paula Caplan's book ("They Say You're Crazy').  Caplan is a clinical psychologist and researcher who was invited in 1985 to be on an advisory committee when the psychiatrists were putting together DSM III-R. She was appalled that they were going to create a mental illness called "Masochistic Disorder," later termed "Self-Defeating Personality Disorder".  This 'illness' lists all the symptoms that women who have been physically and mentally abused most of their lives tend to show.   Another one was to be Pre-Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder, classed as a depression.

She and a number of others provided the main decision makers with lists of references trashing the idea that these were illnesses or disorders; she also requested numerous times that they send her copies of 'unpublished data' that the decision makers said were being used in their 'research' into the 'research', most of which were not provided.

Despite all this, including gathering of petitions from psychologists and psychiatrists, protest marches, etc. by all who were opposed to these
classifications, they just went ahead- and I might add, the 'criteria' used, according to Caplan appear to be primarily those that we might call 'pagan, i.e. the felt in their heart sense by the decision makers that these conditions exist and they expressed the felt belief that by classifying them, women would be benefitted.

To my mind it is important to recognise when people use the word 'science' they may mean something, operationally speaking, that is science in name only --  and the above is a classic example of this.  Unfortunately it has meant that the medical community has bought into the DSM publications as evidence of 'science'. The methods that these decision makers apparently use are not remotely 'scientific' and in Caplan's opinion, couldn't be better examples of what is not scientific.  Their opinions reflect their own beliefs and prejudices and little more.  Contrary evidence was ignored, and she gave many examples of out and out lying to boot.

A chilling read.
