Her name is pronounced "mee-CHAL", where the "ch" is like the "kof" of Hebrew, or the "g" of Dutch, or the "ch" in "Bach" or Scottish "loch". If you don't know any of these languages, then try to imitate the sound one makes while clearing the throat. It's not the "ch" of "China" or the "ch" of "Michael". If all else fails, "mee-KAL" will do.
As for her name, we picked it because we like the sound. Michal appears in the Bible, mostly in the first book of Samuel, chapter 19. She's the daughter of Saul, first king of Israel, and the wife of David (as in David and Goliath). In the passage beginning with verse 16, she saves David's life by a clever trick. She is not named for Mikhail Gorbachev.
