Robert Carty, though not well-known and usually overlooked by record companies, is simply one of the very best musicians around today. He works primarily in the field of what is known as space music, part of the electronic and new age realms. Space music is a term first popularized by the radio program Music from the Hearts of Space, and represents cosmic or transcendent music that creates a sense of spaciousness or awe before the vast and subtle dimensions of inner and outer space. It often has healing qualities, or perhaps just provides some beneficial background music or spacious ambience that may refresh you but won't disturb you while you're doing other things.
Spacemusic uses very subtle, fluid but powerful melodies and forms which change gradually and gently into each other. When it exists at all in spacemusic, rhythm is very gentle. Some pieces of space music are like eerie and haunting sound sculptures which make a powerful impact even without having any melody or rhythm at all. The best space music, though it makes use of "minimalist" techniques that reduce the dissonance and complications of other modernist music, is very rich, sensuous and full of resonant tones that evoke the significant moments and feelings of your life, and put you in contact with your deepest mystic or meditative awareness.
Like much new age music, Carty's aims to inspire as well as to relax and heal. Carty says he hopes it will bring as much peace of heart to the listener as it does to himself while creating it. Carty's is a music you can always turn to to relax and restore your spirits. It is a solace, a balm and a tonic for your troubles, and a window to the imagination. It stimulates the senses, opens the mind and delights the heart. It is at once bright and ethereal, spacious and contemplative, yet deep and passionate.
For those of you who are familiar with some spacemusic, but don't know Carty's, comparisons might be useful. It lies somewhere amidst the darker and more spare or ethnic sounds of Roach, the smooth misty music of Serrie, the deep sensuous spiritual sonority of Parsons, and the bright esoteric spirituality of Michael Hammer.
As favorite artists who have influenced him, Robert mentions Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream, Jon Anderson, Mychael Danna & Tim Clement, Giles Reaves, Jonn Serrie, Vangelis, Steve Roach, and most Hearts of Space artists. Robert mentions that he likes earlier Klaus Schulze better than his later stuff, and that although Roach's "primordial" style is intellectually stimulating, his Quiet Music "touches his heart."
Carty's music puts me vividly in touch with the people and places I love. It is a lush, relaxing, delicate and beautiful sound that sometimes takes the listener into another dimension altogether. The music "comes from above," as Carty says, and at the same time reflects our Mother Earth's sacred beauty and value. It also elevates us into the "deep sky," where we can cavort with the spirits that dwell there.
Recommended Carty recordings |
|---|
A brief review by Eric Mystic of each of Robert Carty's recordings. They are listed in rough order of my current preference. Of course, opinions differ about which ones are the best, and my mind changes sometimes too! See also the Recommendations by Others for slightly different opinions! People often ask me for a list like this, to help them choose which of Carty's many albums to try first. I don't want it to seem like I have no discrimination, even though in truth I recommend all of his works. But making up a list like this means a few of the CDs have to end up on the bottom, even though I like them!
Those marked ***** are excellent and likely to rank among my favorite 20 or 30 new age/visionary/spacemusic CDs/tapes of all time. Those marked **** are very good and likely to rank among my Top 100 or my top runners up of all time. Those marked *** are good, and if they are marked ***1/2 they may be mentioned among other runners up to my list of new age favorites. Note that some of Carty's newest works may eventually attain a higher position within this list than they now occupy (or maybe fall lower), and perhaps eventually surpass some of my older traditional favorites. Note that this list includes a few works that Robert is not now making publically available, though you may see references to them on this site or elsewhere.
These pieces are listed in the order in which I discovered them, not in order of preference. I would recommend them all about equally.
Exciting news!
Now all eight of the above great Carty compositions from 1997 or earlier (along with Heart Waves, mentioned below), have been assembled into one dynamite collection, The Mystic Choice. Don't miss it!
The Gateway, from Gateway
This 30 minute meditation, composed on the eve of the New Millennium, is a warm and subtle celebration of our passage into a new world. It has an angelic and transcendental quality, acting as a gateway to the dimensions beyond, while at the same time gently launching us into the primordial flow of grounded being. Speaking of my top favorites, I would say this is top favorite number 13! (and ranks with any of the others in the Top 12)
Life Presence, and Piercing the Blue, from Ethereal Deserts
These two adjacent tracks are really more like one track, in two parts. This is rich, enveloping, magical music. It stays on course until it wrings every possible nuance of feeling from its themes. Life Presence is also a top favorite for sure
Goin Bye Bye, from Mount Meru
Totally absorbing, clear and powerful; two bad it ends and "goes bye bye" after only 4 minutes!
Sensory Link, from Darklight
This piece acts like an introduction to the extended finale, and is on the same level of excellence. Sensory Link is perhaps unique among Carty's works for its restrained style and strikingly original melody line. Listening to it, you might feel like you are floating in air or suspended in water.
Nagual Dance, and Spirit Stalking, from Nagual Heart
Like Emanations, these two great pieces have a steady rhythm provided by the nylon-spanish guitar sound in counterpoint to intriguing, deep, moody and wonderful melodic developments.
Attracting Light, and Polaris, from Starlight Vol.1
Gemlike, radiant, soulful explorations of deep and bright skies
Star Breathing, from Starlight Vol.2
The skies seem to breath with the bright sounds of the galaxy
Moving, and Spaces, from Moving Spaces
These two long tracks are warm and profound highlights of Robert's floating meditative style.
Awakening with You, and The Living Universe, from The Living
Awakening with You is something like a more flowing, non-rhythmic version of Love Life, as if we were seeing the living world through the eyes of newly-awakened love. The Living Universe has powerful original sounds evocative of cosmic life.
Oceanic Space, Part One, from Oceanic Space A cosmic, oceanic adventure of powerful and engaging sounds.
Heart Waves, and Universal Glow, from Spectrums
The two most heartfelt pieces from an album of richly relaxing sonority.
Emerging, from Essence
This piece has gradually emerged as a favorite of mine. Its thick, rich, shimmering instrumentation is much like Timeless, which was created at about the same time; but has a darker and more subdued tone. Although the rest of the Essence album is not quite as good as this opening track, it may be worth having just for this 10-minute sonic adventure.
Ether, from Plateaus of Ether
Less intense than the preceeding track on the album; a gentle and rich meditative sound trip.
Well Being, from Soulscape
This work has a spectacular sonic richness and uplifting warmth that helps you connect with yourself with a fresh new vividness. There is a carnival-like feeling in it too.
Desire of the Ages, and Of Space and Time, from The Endless Vista
Warm, smooth, subtle, deep. I also recommend the other tracks.
Spiraling In, from Life Rhythms
A very stimulating, inspiring, energizing piece with a compelling, danceable, world-beat rhythm and extravagantly lush electronics.
Seasong, and Water Memories, from Dreaming Earth, Water Memories
Dive in and enjoy these two deep and refreshing water pieces. Father Neptune would be delighted!
Callings, and Dream of the Others, from Cleansing Fire
Probably the two best pieces on a wonderful album of quiet, slow, relaxing, trance-inducing, minimalistic, innovative, haunting, ambient soundscapes.
Extended Stillness, and Garunda Valley, from Serotonin Ashram
Extended Stillness and the preceeding track on the same album (Medicine Quest) have that melodic subtlety that we heard in Darklight's "Sensory Link." It touches a profound level of sensuous, relaxing but deep awareness. Garunda Valley is rhythmic and vibrant, but not percussive. It is sensuous, evocative and scenic, especially in the last 4 minutes when the rhythm stops so we can take in the "view."
Sky Born, and Ourselves, from Atmospheres
Sky Born is darker and deeper than most of Carty's works from his earlier period, and a real sonic skyborne inner adventure. Ourselves is one of his finest floating pieces.
Merging Source, and Breathing the Infinite, from Timeless
Flowing, soothing, gentle, scenic works of pure spacemusic based on a repeating theme.
Deep Reflections, from Tracks Across the Universe
Hauntingly moving; powerfully floating.
Floating, from Silent Dreams
This is one of the more affecting pieces on this rich and profound album.
Spiral Vibrations, from Microspirals
Deeply soothing and healing music, much like Darkness to Light but with a bit more "bite" and lots of swishing sound effects.
Evolving Love/Rising Memories, from Earth Ground
It seems my favorite work from each Carty album frequently has love in the title. This one evolves gradually and solidly over its 7 minutes toward ever greater warmth, much as life on earth does. It is a forerunner to the great "Within Love", composed the following year. The following flute piece, Rising Memories, should always be listened to together with Evolving Love, because it completes its "evolving" trajectory. Evolving Love by itself ends too suddenly.
Enhancing an Interval, and Vision Process, from Tonalities
Enhancing an Interval is amazingly enchanting, with a gently-rhythmic melody that elevates mind and heart into peace and remembrance. Vision Process is a short, sparkling, lively, fantastic, upbeat sound trip in the Berlin-school mode. It has its own visual expression on DVD, but the music itself has a visual quality all its own.
That Desert Feel, from The Inexplicable
A three-part masterpiece of smoothly-flowing atmospheric ambience. In Part Two, flutes provide a unique rhythmic touch, and in Part Three a deep climax is reached.
Source Discovery, from Source
Even more than the piece called Darkness to Light, this one takes you from the darkness of the previous tracks into the warm and brilliant light of the source of our being. A 30-minute, 4 part adventure you'll not soon forget.
Rest, and Alpha Call, from Silent Dreams
All the pieces on this album are special, although some (tracks 4 and 5) are so subtle and quiet they are best listened to while asleep! Rest is an exquisite slow introduction to this dreamy ambient work. The first part of Alpha Call, the next track, is a highlight of the album, although it then lapses into more familiar (but nice) vibrato sounds.
Into Deepness, from Deep Spirit
This piece leads the listener into some profound meditative spaces. It has vivid sound and compelling drama in its unfolding.
Into Spirit, from Horizon's Call
This soft, gentle piece conveys a special sentimentality. It has a percussion background that enhances its vivid imagery.
Mountain Spell, from Himalayan Dreams
Spooky, enchanting, ritualistic, sonorous; an exciting addition to the Bewitched Genre
Deep Contact, from Microspirals
From the popping sound samples of rocks, this piece develops into a subtle, magical rhythmic ambience.
Deep Light, and In Flight, from High Meditations
Deep Light leads the listener into the heights of Ascending Love, which follows. In Flight is a piece of wonderous sonority that takes you high. It might even appear to be leaving you dangling, until it leads to a "landing" in the tonic key at the end.
Other goodies (some just as good as those above), in very rough changeable order; all wonderful:
Catching the Light, and others from Dreamswirl
Dreaming Stone, Electric Skies, Stories of Ancient Winds, and Thermal Glide, from Ethereal Deserts
Peaceful Meditations, from High Meditations
Infinite Waves, and Splashing Life, from Oceanic Space
Emergence, Cycles, and Earth and Air, from Cloud Pull
Organic Elemental, from Darklight
Starflesh, and Moving Higher, from The Living
Winged Heart, and Sunminds, from Natural Wonder
Zephyr Wind, and Advance Of The Bouncing, Blinking Light Balls, from Mount Meru
Visions, Sky Touching, Spirits Flow, and Arriving Peace, from Skyhearts
Crack Between Worlds, from Nagual Heart
Touching Atoms, from Microspirals
Swirling Spectrum, from Spectrums
The Canyon Chanters, from Tonalities
The Arching Sky, from Horizons Call
Rhythm of Pulse, from Suntales
and too many more to mention!!
