     Agustin's Biography

Agustín Rios Amaya, gypsy artist, guitarist and singer, was born in May of 1947 and raised in Morón de la Frontera, Spain where he developed his full range of artistic talent in the midst of a true flamenco family which included, reckoned artists: Guitarist, Diego del Gastor; dancer and singer, Pepe Rios; and Amparo Torre, singer.

His guitar playing is in the authentic style of the Moron gypsy and contains the falsetas of his uncle and teacher Diego del Gastor, Niño Ricardo and other great artists of the Flamenco Golden Era. Agustin's singing style is influenced by the great Antonio Mairena and he also has a vast collection of authentic songs passed down the generations from his family. His dance style is influenced by Pepe Ríos, his brother, and the great gypsy artists he grew up with.

He performed on tour in Europe and Soviet Union with La Cingla's flamenco troupe in the 60's, and has been teaching and performing in the Bay Area for the last 25 years. In November 1995, while in Spain, he received the best guitarist award at the gypsy Fiesta de Utrera which was presented by the world famous Pinini family, Fernanda, Bernarda and Pepe de Utrera.

Instruction on Guitar, Song and Dance

Agustin Rios Amaya offers the most authentic instruction in Flamenco guitar, singing and dance in the United States to all levels of artists.

His unique, artistically designed Flamenco studio is conveniently located in the Rockridge District of Oakland, California where it is easily accessible from major highways and within walking distance from BART and bus lines. Private classes in guitar, dance, and singing can be scheduled to meet your individual agenda. Dance instruction may be taught in collaboration with Flamenco dancer, Christina Vega, to exhibit the female dancer's use of arms, skirt, body movement and artistic interpretation. As Flamenco is a vast art and the classes are private, you may select your focus and pace, i.e, if you want to work specific on forms, rhythm (compas), techniques, guitar falsetas or dance choreography to create your individual solos, etc.

Class prices vary based on your level of knowledge and interest. You can receive a discount on the price of a single class (normally $50.00 each) if classes are purchased in a prepaid block of 4 which can be taken over a period of 6 weeks. At the end of your session, you may video or audio tape the material covered in the class for self study and future reference (with signed agreement that all rights are reserved by Agustin Rios).
